A protected stone or tile and grout will be easier to clean, resist staining, and provide a safer and healthier environment. Considering the investment, why wouldn't you provide the surface with the maximum protection possible?
How can I tell if my stone has already been sealed?
Apply a drop of water at least 1/2 inch in diameter to the top and the stone and let stand for at least 15 minutes. Cover with a glass to inhibit evaporation. If the stone did not darken then your stone is probably sealed against water-based stains. Testing for oil repellency is not as simple because if your stone is not sealed, you will have an oil stain.
How often do I need to seal my stone?
If you sealed your stone with Top of the line Professional sealers and have maintained it with the proper daily cleaners your sealer should last up to 2-3 years. Sealant wears over time, and a periodic reapplication of sealer is necessary for proper protection of stone surfaces. There are many factors such as cleaning procedures and traffic volume that affect the longevity of the sealant
How do I keep my stone clean?
We recommend using a cleaner specially formulated for natural stone. General purpose cleaning products can damage natural stone or the sealer applied, so don't just pick anything off of the shelf at the grocery store. Improperly formulated cleaners or those with acids (such as porcelain or tile cleaners) may etch the surface of the stone. What is an impregnating sealer?
An impregnator sealer is designed to penetrate into the surface of the stone. A penetrating sealer is like a coat of armor for your stone, tile or grout. A sealer will decrease the opportunity that anything can stain or harm your surface. Most natural stones are porous to some degree. A high-quality sealant helps restrict the absorption of water, oil, and dirt that stain and deteriorate the surface of the stone. Properly applied, a high-quality impregnator sealer will not affect the texture or the appearance of the stone.
What is a Topical Sealer?
A topical sealer is a protective coating that forms a barrier on the stone's surface. For Mexican Pavers, Saltillo, Italian Pavers, Slate, Brick, and Sandstone, topical sealers are often used for interior applications. Properly applied, a topical sealer will always affect the texture and appearance of the stone, usually resulting in a richer color and a glossy, reflective surface.
What do I need to do to prepare my home to have the stone floors finished?
We ask that the homeowner move all decorative items, valuables and small furniture to a safe, out of the way area. Our crew will be able to move the larger furniture such as sofas, large chairs and tables. Items we will work around are: large appliances, pianos, grandfather clocks, entertainment centers, pool tables, full bookcases and hutches, excessively heavy furniture. All toys, laundry, books, etc need to be cleared from the floor. All cables for electronics and long drapes need to be pulled up off the floor. Pets should be secured since our crew will have a door propped open to run equipment inside.
