SLATE Cleaning, Restoration, Sealing and Maintenance
A great combination of earth tone colors and the finish makes this stone one of a kind. The vibrant colors and unique textures make slates appropriate for interior as well as exterior applications. Because it is formed in layers, it can be split to expose beautifully textured surfaces. The usual colors of slates are earthy (various shades and mixes of browns, beiges, yellows), black, dark-grays, and greenish-gray but shades of pinks, purples and copper are also found. They usually exhibit a lot of variation in color among the pieces quarried from the same site.
Sealer Options for Slate
Two Sealing Options are available for Slate. Penetrating and Topical
Penetrating sealers are clear and soak into the Slate with no change to appearance. The function of the penetrating sealer is to fill the pores and make the Slate less absorbent, keeping spills to the surface only. Keep in mind that all natural stone is porous; staining is still possible depending on what is spilled.
Topical/Surface sealer will always impart some shine ranging from semi-gloss to high gloss. First we apply a large molecule chemical resistant sealer. This soaks into the Slate as much as possible to prevent water penetration and stains... This becomes a working surface as long as it is cleaned properly and recoated before the sealer has broken through and bare tile is exposed. It is very important that topcoat sealers are maintained properly or they will lose restorability.
Stripping and Refinishing:
When Slate is sealed with a topical sealer or surface coating this protective coating wears out without periodic maintenance. When the coating deteriorates and begins to crack and chip, it loses its ability to repel stains, oils, dirt, and other contaminates. Soon thereafter the Slate becomes a candidate for refinishing.
